The program covers maritime activities and related land-based operations, which encompasses several types of maritime enterprises, including ports, the Seaway corporations, ship owners, terminals, and shipyards in North America.

To obtain certification, the participants must comply with several requirements, including the assessment of their environmental performance on a scale of 1 to 5 in accordance with the environmental program’s detailed framework and an external verification of the results. Green Marine requires its participants to adopt practices and technologies that have a direct impact on the environmental footprint of their operations.

The environmental program’s success is derived largely from its ability to identify local and continental issues.  As a result, some of the performance indicators have been developed to protect specific habitat and/or species in a region or to address maritime operations in that area.

Green Marine participants' environmental performance has steadily improved since the first year of evaluation in 2008.

The Green Marine program demonstrates year after year its ability to encourage its participants to go beyond regulatory requirements.

The annual performance report displays all the individual results of the participants in addition to the overall average and an analysis of the environmental performance for the year concerned. Their progress is evaluated on a 1-to-5 scale whereby Level 1 indicates the monitoring of regulations and Level 5 reflects excellence and leadership.

BC Ferries has revealed two cutting-edge conceptual designs for its major vessels program with the first of seven new ferries to be delivered in 2029. The main objective is to improve system capacity while prioritizing sustainability in meeting its mission of transporting clients between Vancouver Island and the Lower Mainland, and the Sunshine Coast and mainland.

Replacing six aging counterparts by 2032, the vessels will each carry up to 360 vehicles and 2,100 passengers with a more eco-friendly, efficient, standardized design that promises to deliver an enhanced ferry experience.

BC Ferries has been working with naval architect firm LMG Marin AS to develop a vessel design that incorporates engines that can use bio- and renewable fuels, along with a battery-hybrid propulsion system that can easily be transitioned to full battery-electric operation in future.

A Request for Supplier Qualification (RFSQ) through shipbroker H. Clarkson and Co. Ltd. and bcbid.gov.bc.ca has been issued. An upcoming Request for Proposals this summer will help qualified shipyards to bring these sustainable vessel designs to life.
