This is a reminder that submissions are open for speaker and presentation proposals for the upcoming Imagine Marine Conference 2024. The deadline for submission is May 15th, 2024.
Please include the following your proposals:
- The name of the speaker
- The title or theme of the presentation
- A brief ~150 word summary of the presentation and how it meets one of our areas of interest (see below)
We are seeking presentations in the following areas:
- Workforce development, labour market or training research related to the marine sector and/or that would help inform marine sector practices or approaches.
- Pilot projects, practices and programs that could help address key challenges for attracting employees and/or students into the Canadian marine sector.
- Initiatives/best practices that address retention challenges (e.g. upskilling training/career progression, isolation, work-life balance, parenthood support, connectivity, anti-harassment measures, mentoring, and inclusivity).
- Perspectives, strategies and/or workshops to improve the understanding of workforce diversity/inclusion; and increase attraction and retention of underrepresented groups in the marine sector.

A new B.C. Maritime Industries Strategy will chart the course for a more competitive, modernized marine sector with reduced carbon emissions, and creating more highly skilled jobs to meet growing demands.
“B.C. is home to Canada’s largest maritime sector with leaders and businesses at the forefront of marine innovation, clean fuels and technological advancements,” said Brenda Bailey, Minister of Jobs, Economic Development and Innovation. “By modernizing our maritime infrastructure and better co-ordinating maritime industry contracts and workforce strategies, B.C. will support local companies to grow into new international markets, and open more career opportunities and jobs for British Columbians.”
The new B.C. Maritime Industries Strategy is a key action in the StrongerBC Economic Plan. As much as $25 million will be invested in new and modernized infrastructure and assets that will support shipyards to meet growing market demand for their services and attract more investment to B.C.
The funding is being provided by the Province to the Association of B.C. Marine Industries (ABCMI) to deliver the new B.C. Maritime Industries Infrastructure Modernization and Expansion Grant Program. B.C. companies can apply for grant funding on the ABCMI website.

LÉVIS, QC – Kateri Champagne Jourdain, Minister of Employment and Minister Responsible for the Côte-Nord Region, and Martine Biron, Minister of International Relations and La Francophonie, Minister Responsible for the Status of Women and Member of Parliament for Chutes-de-la-Chaudière, announced an investment of $3,514,870 for training in the marine sector.
This financial support will enable the Comité sectoriel de main-d’oeuvre de l’industrie maritime to conduct, in collaboration with the Institut maritime du Québec, Collège de Rimouski, a vast skills enhancement project. To that end, nearly 2,800 hours of training for workers in the Quebec marine industry will be updated to better meet the needs of the industry. Heddle Shipyards has been awarded a $135.5 million dollar contract for the Vessel Life Extension (VLE) of the Canadian Coast Guard icebreaker (CCGS) Terry Fox – securing the future of the Port Weller Dry Docks for the next generation of Ontario shipbuilders. The nearly three-year project will involve an extensive engineering, planning and procurement phase, with shipyard work scheduled to begin in December 2023.
