From Colin's Desk

Hello all,

The federal government released Budget 2022 last week, with a focus on affordability, investment in housing, people, and skills, a transition to a greener economy, and investing in innovation and productivity. Some key investments of interest to our marine sector are in clean technologies and batteries, in transportation infrastructure, in job and community revitalization, in training, in emerging technologies like Artificial Intelligence, and in zero-emission technologies.

In this edition we are featuring Marlene Conway Diels, President and CEO of Envision Technologies and founder of the Diversity Development Network of Canada. Her commitments to improving diversity in the workforce to solve labour shortages and improve productivity and creativity are compelling.

Please note that we will have our very first face-to-face CMISA event to be held on May 16th the night before Mari-Tech gets underway in Niagara Falls. We are very excited to see many of you there so please register so that we know who is attending.  NB that if you’re not attending the conference but colleagues from your team will be, they are welcome too. Please make sure that they are aware of the opportunity and get them registered. You might also want to consider the special rate for accommodation: The negotiated room rates for Mari-Tech are only available until April 16th Here is the link to book rooms directly.

Should you wish to become a member of CMISA and enjoy attractive benefits like these event and member spotlights, please reach out to us at support@cmisa.ca.

Finally, as always, please take note of our new Job Board and a) take advantage of it if your company has an opening and b) send links to friends and family so that we can attract new people into our sector. We all need the help!

Stay safe and I am looking forward to seeing you soon,

Colin Cooke

President and CEO

PLEASE NOTE: A public service announcement today comes from our colleague Bob Clark with MetalCraft Marine. He reminds everyone to double-check by telephone anytime that your suppliers indicate a change in bank account information. Bob has been bitten in the past and so made sure that his team took the extra step BEFORE making a sizable payment to a long-standing supplier. When he noticed a change in a bank account number, although everything else was consistent and accurate (even the email info), he called the other company who confirmed that they had never issued the invoice and that the account number in question was not theirs. That one phone call prevented many hours of follow up and possibly the loss of over $100,000.

Be careful. Call your suppliers. Don’t hit SEND unless you’re sure.

Envision Technologies and Diversity Development Network of Canada

Photos of Marlene Conway Diels

Marlene Conway Diels is a woman who wears many hats and is a force to be reckoned with! She is the President and CEO of Envision Technologies, a firm established in 2003. Envision Technologies provides a number of critical strategic, technical, management and implementation services to clients from a variety of sectors and organizations. The firm also provides assistance with the development of supply chains, industrial offset, human resources, skills, funding and partnership development.

Because she saw a growing need for collaboration amongst stakeholders to increase diverse peoples’ access and advancement in Canadian industries, Marlene established the not-for-profit Diversity Development Network of Canada Corporation (DDNC). She firmly believes that creating a more diverse workforce is essential to filling the labour shortage currently experienced in marine sectors. DDNC provides the tools, resources and education to support companies becoming more inclusive, and in looking beyond the more “traditional” workforce, which in turn drives greater productivity and creativity. Connecting companies with these needs and gaps is a key part of what DDNC does.

Marlene has significant experience with organizations that foster youth participation, like cadet leagues, to establish talent pipelines. Cadet leagues attract as many young women as men and are excellent places to encourage young people to obtain the motivation to get further training for careers in defence and manufacturing.

The thread that runs through Marlene’s work is her ability to establish and manage multi-stakeholder collaborative projects. Finding the right people and building teams is key to her success, and her deep understanding of what makes partnerships work leads to long-term relationships. Joining CMISA has been a positive step for Marlene, as she has a strong desire to contribute to the association and to make use of the opportunities for collaboration between members.
