From Colin's Desk

Colin Cooke

Hello everyone,

We are mid-way through August, and anyone who isn’t on vacation with their family knows how busy our ports, yards and waterways are! We also understand that the global supply chain is still compromised and that the labour market in our sector is very tight, so I hope you are all faring well. If you are reading On Watch for the first time thanks to it being passed along to you, you are welcome to sign up for future editions here –  it’s free and we never share your emails with anyone.

In this edition we feature a Canadian family-owned business, Thordon Bearings. In an interview with the fourth-generation and first female CEO, Anna Galoni, we are pleased to showcase an innovative company that takes its mission to contribute to a greener and more sustainable future very seriously. Thordon is a great example of how being a part of a Canadian ship building program can give a company a huge boost into international markets.

Finally, as always, please take note of our Job Board and a) take advantage of it if your company has an opening and b) send links to friends and family so that we can attract new people into our sector. We all need the help!

Stay safe and I am looking forward to seeing you soon,

Colin Cooke

President and CEO

Thordon Bearings Inc. is a family-owned Canadian business headquartered in Burlington, Ontario. Thordon manufactures high performance, oil and grease-free bearing systems, seals and other shaft line products for the global marine, clean power, pump and industrial markets. Founded in 1911 by Major George J. Thomson, the small Canadian industrial distribution business first made packings and gaskets and sold engineers’ supplies to the mills and boats. By 1965, third generation owner George A. (Sandy) Thomson developed the Thordon polymer and the world’s first polymer alloy bearings for water lubricated vertical pumps were put into operation.

Since 2005, Thordon has been led by the fourth-generation owner, Anna Galoni, who is Sandy’s stepdaughter. An innovative company, Thordon continues to develop new pollution-free products for the marine market and solve problems for its customers. Anna, an epidemiologist from Poland, started in the business by working in every department until she reached the top as CEO and Chair of the Advisory Board. Today, Thordon is the recognized leader in the design and manufacture of non-polluting bearing systems in the marine and clean power generation industries worldwide.

Thordon’s big breakthrough, according to Anna, was in the late 1980s when the Royal Canadian Navy used Thordon propeller shaft bearings on the 12 Canadian-built Halifax-Class frigates. Since then, the company has supplied over 45 navies and coast guards worldwide, as well as a wide variety of vessels such as bulk carriers, cruise ships, ferries, container ships, fishing vessels, tugs, yachts and other types of ships. As Thordon propeller shaft, rudder and deck equipment bearings operate without oil and grease, they eliminate this pollution source from ships. They are also quieter, which is positive for marine wildlife, and critically, require less maintenance. As Anna points out, for large ships such as frigates, not having to withdraw the propeller shaft on the vessel in dry dock to inspect or replace the propeller shaft bearings is a huge advantage. “Our philosophy,” she explains, “is if you buy it from us, you will never have to replace it.”

Family and corporate values are very important to Thordon. Thordon’s focus has been to contribute to a greener and more sustainable future, rather than focussing on enhancing shareholder returns. This is possible as Thordon remains a private, family-run company. The team is able to concentrate on developing products that help protect our oceans, seas and rivers.

According to Anna, it’s the amazing group of people and global distributor network that makes Thordon special, as everyone is committed to making a difference together. Thordon contributes to the community in many ways, such as holding annual fundraisers for the United Way, supporting local charities in Burlington and providing scholarships for post graduate environmental engineering students at McMaster University in Hamilton. Anna appreciates that the Canadian Marine Industries and Shipbuilding Association is a not-for-profit and believes that the association brings visibility and connections to members, something that she truly values.
