Hello everyone,

Welcome to another edition of On Watch. It’s a busy time for our sector, as evidenced by the Government of Canada procurement opportunities and the wide range of shipbuilding and marine sector news. We try to bring you news about big shipbuilding projects, success stories of our members, items of environmental and technological advancements, and other articles worth noting, whether they are Canadian or international. Our internal CMISA team met a few weeks ago and have plans to broaden our news content even further in the fall. If any of our readers have specific suggestions, please do send them along to communications@cmisa.ca. And please note that if you are reading On Watch for the first time thanks to it being passed along to you, you are welcome to sign up for future editions here, in our Stay In Touch section.

A warm welcome to new CMISA members SSi CanadaWajaxWärtsilä Canada and Hepburn Engineering Inc. We look forward to featuring your good news and connecting you with other members. It’s wonderful to see our association grow with such a variety of members. I do encourage our other readers to consider membership in CMISA as our organization grows in numbers and strength to provide you with opportunities to connect with each other.

Finally, as always, please take note of our Job Board and a) take advantage of it if your company has an opening and b) send links to friends and family so that we can attract new people into our sector. We all need the help!

Stay safe and I am looking forward to seeing you soon,

Colin Cooke

Board Announcement

Rousseau Metal

Canadian Marine Industries & Shipbuilding Association

Our founding Chair of the Board of Directors of the Canadian Marine Industries and Shipbuilding Association, John Schmidt of Chantier Davie, has recently retired from the Board. We owe him a huge amount of appreciation for his instrumental role in getting the association underway in the very beginning, and he has been a stalwart supporter ever since. His friends and colleagues can rest assured that he isn’t going anywhere; rather, he felt that this was the right time to pass the baton here at CMISA. We so appreciate the drive that John brought to getting us up and running.

As a result, we are very pleased to announce that our new Chair of the Board is Shaun Padulo, CEO of Heddle Shipyards. Shaun has been an active supporter of the association for many years and has served as the Vice-Chair over the last three. He brings to the role a deep knowledge of both the opportunities and challenges in our sector as well as a solid understanding of the association and we are excited to work with him going forward. We are delighted that Shaun is bringing his energy, motivation and innovative outlook to his new position on our board!

The new Vice-Chair of the CMISA board is Darcy Byrtus, President at BMT Canada. Darcy too brings a depth of understanding of our sector, both inside and outside of government, and has been a dynamic board member over the last year that he’s been working with the team. We look forward to his advice and leadership as we continue to grow.

And finally, we wish to welcome our newest member to the board, Susanne Vaas. Susanne is the Vice-President, Government and Corporate Affairs at Chantier Davie and, although new to the sector, brings a wealth of experience in the not-for-profit world and governance issues in general. As such, she will be a tremendous asset to the team.

We thank all of our board directors, current as well as previous members, for giving of their time and energy for the betterment of the association. We are truly grateful for the diversity of perspectives and experiences of our board members, and that so many people from all across the country want to see EVERYONE in our sector thrive and flourish. Thank you.
