From Colin's Desk

Hello everyone,

We are at the formal beginning of summer and our yards and waterways are very busy all across the country! The CMISA team recently met to review our newsletter, and we have been so encouraged by the positive feedback we have received from our readers. Thank you so much! We discussed how we might continue to improve the newsletter, and if any of our readers have specific suggestions, please do send them along to communications@cmisa.ca.

I was particularly pleased that our members have been enjoying the editorial features we have produced, especially those featuring prominent women at our member companies. It is very encouraging to hear of the diverse workplaces and the opportunities that the sector is providing women. This edition’s Member Spotlight features Rousseau Metal’s Katie O’Brien, and the multigenerational families in the community of Saint-Jean-Port-Joli that have grown along with Rousseau. Once again, we are reminded of the tremendous impact that shipbuilding and the marine sector have on the identities of communities across our country.

We continue to attract new subscribers to the newsletter, and new as well as returning members to our association. I do encourage you to consider membership in CMISA as our organization grows in numbers and strength to provide you with opportunities to connect with each other.

Finally, as always, please take note of our Job Board and a) take advantage of it if your company has an opening and b) send links to friends and family so that we can attract new people into our sector. We all need the help!

Stay safe and I am looking forward to seeing you soon,

Colin Cooke

Rousseau Metal Inc. offers high-quality made-to-order cabinets and work benches that are designed and manufactured in Canada. Founded in 1950 in Saint-Jean-Port-Joli, Quebec by André Rousseau, the company has grown considerably from its first five employees working in a 15,000 square foot plant to over 350 employees, two plants, distributors across Canada, and many innovative products and manufacturing equipment.

Rousseau has been in the defence sector since the 1970s when partners installed the first shelving units in bases. By the early 1980s, Rousseau began to provide equipment storage for the US Navy, and this contract allowed Rousseau to start covering the private and government sectors in both Canada and the United States. Since then, there have been countless high-value projects and relationships in the sector. Rousseau provides products at all levels of the supply chain, from directly to end users like government to other suppliers with contracts for commercial or public projects. This experience at all stages of the supply chain positions a Canadian company like Rousseau well to work with naval architects, shipyards and ship owners such as the Royal Canadian Navy, the Canadian Coast Guard and commercial clients on their major shipbuilding projects.

According to Katie O’Brien, Customer Sales Representative, Rousseau has been able to offer very reliable and safe storage solutions to the military to store tools, weapons and other items when available space is a challenge, such as on board ships. The company understands that space is a premium on ships, and their storage systems allow the maximum capability and operability to be delivered in a given space. Rousseau’s shelving is ideal for ships, as it can be attached to walls, which is important in moving environments such as vessels at sea. What impresses Katie most is the focus on improvement and innovation, and the development of new approaches and enhancements that fit with existing products.

This focus on improvement makes Rousseau an interesting and exciting place to work. Katie moved to Saint-Jean-Port-Joli from Vancouver with a degree in Linguistics and French five years ago and found a community in Rousseau. Her role in customer services is multi-facetted, and includes marketing, sales, and work across western Canada and North America. Her background has helped her explain technical products to non-specialists. Rousseau has been a welcoming work environment for Katie, and she has found the team to be very inclusive with many leadership opportunities for women. Katie is thrilled to work in a company where many members of her community also work, including her father-in-law, who has been with Rousseau for over 44 years.

This sense of connection is also what Katie appreciates about the Canadian Marine and Shipbuilding Association, to help build her knowledge and understanding of the marine industry. She also finds it positive that CMISA makes efforts to promote the voices of women in the sector, especially young women like herself. Working together, we can continue to promote the wide variety of people, perspectives and opportunities in our sector!
