From Colin's Desk

As I return from a week in Niagara Falls for the Mari-Tech Conference 2022, Ontario has been hit by a massive storm, and large parts of Ottawa and the National Capital Region are still without power 3 days later. I know the authorities are working as quickly as possible to restore power, but I anticipate that this week will be anything but ‘business as usual’ for many companies and individuals in this region. We will use this edition of On Watch to share news from our sector and return to our Member Features in upcoming editions.

Having just returned from our successful AGM and Mari-Tech Conference 2022 in Niagara Falls, let me just say what a pleasure it was to be able to meet so many members, subscribers and people interested in the Canadian marine sector in person! These discussions have given me increased motivation and inspiration on how best to support our sector and fresh ideas on how we can work together as one voice. We had almost 40 companies registered for our AGM, with 50 people in attendance. Board member Shaun Padulo from Heddle Shipyards chaired the meeting, and we had excellent engagement with our members at the AGM and during the reception that followed. I would like to thank our AGM sponsors Genoa Design International Ltd, Duke Marine, Toromont Power Systems, and the Diversity Development Network of Canada for their support of our AGM; we truly appreciated it.

Speaking of in-person visits, I was so pleased to visit the Port Weller Dry Docks of Heddle Shipyards on the way home from the Mari-Tech Conference. I was very impressed with the changes that the team has brought to the site since the last time I passed some years back. Both the Coast Guard and Algoma have vessels being looked after at this time and, as always, I love to see a busy yard!

I was delighted to see three CMISA members, Mrinmayee Thombre from Serco Marine, Bénédicte Juhel from Thales Canada and Laurie Balan from Genoa Design International Ltd. were recently featured as panelists on a Women in Defence and Security panel at an event focussed on how women can make their voices heard, drawing on examples from the shipbuilding sector. It is so encouraging to hear of the new opportunities that are being offered to under-represented groups and of the improvements and positive developments that a more diverse workforce brings to the sector. This panel was part of worldwide efforts to observe the inaugural International Day for Women in Maritime, and I am thrilled that our Association has been featuring the skilled, experienced and talented women amongst our members since we launched this newsletter.

I do encourage you to consider membership in CMISA as our organization grows in numbers and strength as an opportunity to connect with each other. We heard the message clearly at our AGM that knowing more about what each of you are doing is a big benefit to members.

Finally, as always, please take note of our Job Board and a) take advantage of it if your company has an opening and b) send links to friends and family so that we can attract new people into our sector. We all need the help!

Stay safe and I am looking forward to seeing you soon,
